This Weekend's Tragic Events

Dear Emory Community,

Once again, we are faced with the unspeakable pain and anguish of two deadly acts, a mass shooting at Brown University and a terrorist attack at a Chanukah celebration in Australia.

As we come to terms with the tragedy at Brown that took the lives of students, we at Emory University extend our deepest sympathy to the students, faculty and staff and all of their loved ones whose lives have been irrevocably changed.

We are also deeply distressed by the terrorist attack at the Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney. We condemn this act of violence and extend our heartfelt sympathy and concern to all who were harmed, to their families, and to the broader community affected by an attack that targeted people gathered in faith and celebration.

These events, though separated by geography, remind us that we must never become numb to the threat of violence. We must never accept violence as a normal part of life.

Emory continues our work to increase campus safety, and we are monitoring the incidents that took place this weekend. You may notice an increased police presence on campus as an added safety measure. Please look after each other and also remember that Emory has resources to support you.

Our community will remain mindful of our responsibility to care for one another, to uphold our shared values, and to confront violence with resolve and compassion. In the days ahead we hold close in our hearts those affected by all violence and affirm our work for healing and peace.

Sincerely,
Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L
President (Interim), Emory University
