Start of the Spring Semester
Dear Emory Community,
Welcome back for the start of the spring semester. After a brief closure because of the winter weather, our campuses have reopened, and it is wonderful to see everyone again. Classes have begun and we are back to the work that makes Emory a vibrant, world-class research university.
As we enjoy the excitement and possibility of this time at Emory, I continue to reflect on the extraordinary life of President Jimmy Carter. It was an honor for Carmel and me to attend his state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. The ceremony recognized his character and commitment as president and his four decades of selfless service after the presidency. Emory and President Carter had a remarkable bond which included his tenure as University Distinguished Professor, our decades of partnership with First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and our ongoing collaboration with The Carter Center. President Carter said his association with Emory was one of the “great honors” of his life. I can proudly say, the honor was all ours.
As this new semester begins, President Carter’s legacy will inspire us. He exemplified grace, dignity, and humanity in everything he did. These qualities are simple but profound. In the weeks and months ahead, we have the opportunity to embrace them. Let us approach our collective work with understanding. We are at our best when we allow ourselves to see the best in each other and when we find common ground—just as President Carter did throughout his life.
