Reaffirming Emory's Values

Dear Emory Community,

Emory is stronger when we stand together in support of our shared values.

I am fully aware of the impact of the abhorrent behavior and rhetoric used by an individual formerly affiliated with the Law School. As Provost Ahad and Dean Freer communicated, this individual is no longer associated with the university. Additionally, I have asked for a thorough review of the procedures surrounding this particular situation, and for the university broadly.

I join with Provost Ahad, Dean Freer, and others to condemn the vile and hateful language used by the individual and want to be clear that there is no place in our university for racism, harassment, and bullying. Emory’s leaders remain committed to making our university a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued so that all our students, faculty, and staff can succeed.

It is important that I write to make it clear that the views and actions of this person do not reflect the values of our institution or the character of our community. We are, and must continue to be, defined by our values. Moments like this test who we are, but they also reaffirm what we stand for. Together, we will continue to foster an environment grounded in mutual respect, where disgraceful conduct is met with clarity and resolve, and where every member of our community knows they belong.

Sincerely,
Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L
President (Interim), Emory University
