Honoring DeKalb County Officer David Rose
Dear Emory Community,
As August 8 approaches, I am mindful that it marks one year since the abhorrent attack on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that claimed the life of DeKalb County Police Department Officer David Rose.
Our Emory community remembers Officer Rose as a devoted father, the beloved son of an Emory Healthcare employee, and a dedicated officer committed to service. We continue to hold his family, friends, and colleagues in our hearts as they live with this loss. In addition to other events, Emory will host a virtual vigil at noon on Friday, August 7, for our community.
As the anniversary of this tragic shooting at Emory Point approaches, please know that you are not alone. We remain committed to fostering a community where you feel safe and supported, and we continue to invest in the resources that strengthen the well-being of our campuses.
Support is available to you throughout the year, not only during times of remembrance. I encourage you to take a moment to reconnect with the resources Emory offers for your well-being, mental health, and safety.
Most of all, continue to care for one another. Even as we pause to remember, the closing weeks of summer offer a natural moment to slow down — to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with what matters most before the energy of a new academic year returns to our campuses. I remain confident that Emory’s greatest strength is our people and the compassion we bring to our shared mission. May we honor Officer Rose’s memory by engaging in a commitment to serving others.
Sincerely,
Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L
President (Interim), Emory University
